Min-maxing is a term used in RPG (e.g. TTRPG or video games) to describe a specific style of gameplay. Min-maxing is a strategy to optimize a character by minimizing its weakness and maximizing its strenghts.
However, min-maxing often comes at the expense of other game aspects, including versatility, story, and roleplay—as well as the intentional use of bugs/glitches and loopholes. In this article, we'll explain what it entails and if it is worth doing it.
Examples

In a video game, a player can adopt a min-max strategy to create a character that is overpowered in melee, but be underwhelming at magic.
There is a famous Skyrim meme about the stealth archer, a commonly played character archetype (or "build") that relies on Stealth and Archery to deliver staggering blows. This strategy can get extreme by downing powerful enemies (i.e. dragons) with a single arrow.
Min-maxing can also be done in TTRPG, they often offer a wider variety of abilities, classes, and races that allows players to this tactic to new heights. For example, you can choose the ideal combination of every trait to create the perfect wizard. However, it is likely that the backstory and personality of The Wizard™ won't be particularly original.
If you are a player, remember to talk with your gamemaster (GM) before attempting a min-max strategy. Some GMs might not appreciate a mechanic-focused approach to character building in their campaign.
Downsides of min-maxing

Min-maxing is a strategy that can create overpowered characters, but it comes with its downsides. In many cases, it can lead to one-dimensional and uninteresting characters that lack depth and originality. Additionally, this tactic often focuses on combat, which can make exploration and roleplay become secondary.
Furthermore, min-maxing can also create imbalance within the game, particularly in group settings. If one player has a character that is way stronger than the rest, this may cause issues with teamwork. This can create tension between players and disrupt the overall enjoyment of the game.
